Teaching Foreign Languages in Mixed-Age Primary Classes

Thursday June 25, 2026
(4-5pm UK time)

In this free 1-hour webinar, we’ll explore how to plan and deliver an effective and engaging foreign languages curriculum in mixed-age class settings - a reality for many primary schools.

How can we make sure that all pupils, regardless of age, continue to make substantial progress in their foreign language learning?

We’ll be looking at key questions like:

  • Can pupils revisit the same content more than once - and how do we keep it fresh and challenging?
  • Will all pupils have the same chance to reach end-of-primary phase expectations?
  • Are we supporting and stretching all learners appropriately?
  • Are lessons regular, consistent, and meaningful for everyone?
  • Is it all negative, or are there hidden advantages to mixed-age teaching?

What This Session Will Cover:

  1. The Positives of Mixed-Age Teaching
What are the potential benefits of teaching languages in a mixed-age class and how can we make the most of them?
  2. Planning for Mixed-Age Groups
Practical guidance on building a flexible and coherent curriculum that works across year groups.
  3. Classroom Strategies for Progress
Teaching approaches that ensure all pupils are engaged, supported, and progressing - regardless of age or prior knowledge.

You’ll leave with ideas, strategies, and greater confidence to make mixed-age language teaching manageable, meaningful and effective.

This webinar is ideal for all primary school foreign language teachers and leaders who want to increase their knowledge and confidence in primary foreign languages.

We'll be using Language Angels resources to demonstrate our approach but the knowledge and information we will share will be transferable to your own scheme of work if you're not a Language Angels user.

If you’re unable to attend the session live, you’ll be able to watch a full recording of the webinar via our Languages CPD Hub platform (www.languagescpdhub.com).

All primary foreign language leaders and teachers are welcome.

Come along and join us.
